Deer Repellent Sits on the End of a Garden Hose…Deer Sprinkler

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Being surrounded by woods as we are, there is plenty of wildlife for our guests to see. Some we like, some not so much.

The good wildlife are the birds. We have bird feeders set up to attract hummingbirds and songbirds. Our guests love that!

Deer and rabbits are the troublesome wildlife. They eat the plants in our vegetables garden, and the deer eat the shrubs also. We tried all kinds of ways to repel the deer and rabbits — ultrasonic devices, bobcat urine, nets, stinky chemicals. Nothing that we tried was an effective deer repellent or rabbit repellent. That is, until we found the deer sprinkler!

The deer sprinkler has a motion detector and a noisy rotary sprinkler. Whenever a deer or rabbit walks within range, it sprays them with water. They flee from the noise and the big arc of water shooting toward them. The deer sprinkler is the most effective way to repel deer (and repel rabbits) that we have found.

Storm Damage at the Naugas

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

We had a heck of a storm last week, with strong winds and heavy rains. We cold see it coming on Weather.com, but that didn’t really help during the event. We experienced a little flood damage in a storeroom when rain water entered through the roof, but the guests were not inconvenienced.

Things are back to normal now, with plenty of happy guests. The hummingbirds and song birds are out in full force every morning.

We are considering linking up with Expedia or Travelocity, so you may find us there soon.

Clearing Brush

Sunday, August 24th, 2008

Darn that brush! Yesterday and today were devoted to clearing brush from some of the trails around the resort. It’s a tough job, because some of the brush has thorns and some is poison oak.

All the crew covered up in long sleeves and leather gloves. Except for the mosquitoes and occasional hornet nests and maybe some ticks, we did OK. I hope the guests appreciate the nice open trails they have now!

The Birdwatchers…err, Birders

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

A group of birdwatchers nested here at the Naugas last week. Actually, they explained that they prefer to be called birders. They all had their national Audobon Society birding books and stickers, along with binoculars, spotting scopes, noisemakers and recording devices. They were here to do a bird census in our area, and maybe add some species to their birding life lists.

As a stroke of luck, they spotted an unusual species of hummingbird at our hummingbird feeder hanging right out in the yard. It was larger than the ruby-throated hummingbirds, and more purple in color.

They said that the Audubon Society is now fighting to protect bird populations from climage change, through its Together Green website.

The funniest thing I saw (heard, actually) was the bird ringtones on their cell phones. Most people set their mobile phone to give some sort of standard sound or a musical artist, but these folks had downloaded ringtones that sounded like bird calls. When they were goofing around, they would call each other on their cell just to hear the ringtone.

They were a fun group, and we kind of hated to see them fly the coop.
