Genetic Testing Expert Comes to Visit

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

We had a genetic scientist visit over the weekend. He said his company develops at-home DNA tests that anyone can buy over the internet. He said they started with paternity tests, to determine the baby daddy for new mothers.

Now they are more into home test kits for genetic testing to determine illnesses. He said there are DNA home tests to find susceptibility to many diseases, with more becoming available every month.

He said that it is frustrating to detect the genes responsible for a disease like cancer or heart disease, and then have no targeted treatment available to give to the patients.

If he has a genetic test for laziness, I’d like him to try it out on our new yardman…that guy’s DNA would probably go right off the scale.

Young Woman Checking in Alone

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

We had a young woman stay with us the other night. That was kind of unusual, because women normally travel with husbands or in groups and this girl was all alone. Her story was that she is single and pregnant, and she is on her way to start a new life in California.

She said that she is not sure who the father is, it could be one of three guys. (Like the play Mama Mia.) She plans to have DNA testing done right after the baby is born, to learn who the true dad is so she can get child support from him. The DNA testing is admissible in court, so she should have a good legal case. I may not be sure of the ethics, but she certainly has it all planned out to get financial child support for her new baby.

She has even planned it farther, because she plans to purchase economical baby supplies online. She has a store selected for her stroller, crib, diapers, baby toys and bedding.

For better or worse, she is certainly a planner.
