The Healthcare Debate Continues

Saturday, September 5th, 2009

We like to keep things nice and calm here at the Naugas. The scenery is beautiful, we are far from civilization and we attract a mellow crowd.

But a couple of days ago we had two guests get into a heated discussion about healthcare. One was a doctor (general practitioner, I think) and the other a lawyer. The doc wants single-payer coverage, the lawyer wants things left alone. Doc said he’s tired of dealing with insurance companies and financially-stressed patients. Attorney said he wants to keep suing the pants off doctors.

Up here, we learn what medical information we need off the web and get free medicines when we can. We get plenty of exercise and breathe fresh air. Whatever the politicians do, they will do.

Political Bumper Stickers

Friday, June 20th, 2008

Lately I’ve been walking around the parking lot at the Naugas, looking at bumper stickers on the cars of our guests. I see a lot of Hillary stickers still, although I think they will soon all be covered up by Obama stickers…in fact, maybe that is already happening.

There are some McCain stickers also, although not so many. It seems to me that Prius hybrid cars are much more likely to have Obama stickers than McCain stickers.

And, there was a Ron Paul sticker here last week. It was on a Hummer.

Starbucks Democrats & Dunkin Donuts Dems

Monday, June 16th, 2008

We had a national political consultant visit the Naugas a couple of days ago. She is taking a brief rest, then plans to rejoin the fray leading up to the November elections.

During the Democratic presidential contest this year, we heard a lot about two previously-unknown groups. They are Dunkin Donuts Democrats and Starbucks Democrats.

The Dunkin folks supported Hillary Clinton, the Starbucks Democrats supported Barack Obama. The idea is that her base was the common people, and his was the more elite.

Our guest was of the Dunkin Donuts persuasion.

Does she think that John McCain, the Republican nominee, will resurrect the Starbucks label for the Presidential race? He hasn’t as of this writing, but we’ve got almost 5 months of hard-fought politics ahead so it could happen.
